The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding its production facilities in the overseas market and operating in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and the People's Republic of China. Dhaniram Toto was recording Toto words to ensure that the future generations would be able to read the words. However, many words were being replaced by foreign words, such as dui from Bengali for verandah.

Origins

The company was founded in 1917 and its beginnings mirrored Japan's development. In the first half of its existence, the company produced goods to meet demand for modern, contemporary urban housing. To do this, it employed the first tunnel kiln in the nation to make ceramics in continuous flow. It also pioneered automation to allow production control, which helps to increase efficiency and a more consistent production.

The company began expanding its operations overseas in the latter part of the 1980s to take advantage of new markets and sales opportunities. It established the Cera Trading Company, importing and marketing other products of manufacturers to complement its own range of plumbing fittings and sanitary earthenware. This strategy helped increase sales and increased the company's global market share.

In the late 1990s, Toto had shifted its focus on research and development for household appliances that use water. It also upgraded its system of distribution to better serve its customers and increase profit. The company also employed the approach of just-in-time in its supply chain management and sales program. This resulted in a greater level of customer satisfaction.

Discography

It is common for a group with a name like Asia to be a prog band, but it is actually a relatively straightforward rock band. However, even though the group have a diverse musical background their biggest hit was achieved in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a massive blockbuster, but it was not without its difficulties. Record companies placed the band on the position with the order "give us a hit record or we'll take you off the market" and the pressure was on them to deliver. Luckily for Toto they did with the aid of the smash single "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is a result of their previous experience. Before forming the group, the band members were session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their sonic signature has since become the standard for '80s pop, influencing many contemporary artists.

This album starts off hard with songs like Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write amazing AOR songs that slowly work their hooks into your. The album also has some more mellow, jazzy tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album closes with Great Expectations. This song is a mix of folk and distortion AOR that could appear completely unnatural, but actually works extremely well.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes took a turn for the worse. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career, and the band was through numerous drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in aftermath of drug-related charges. However, the group continued to perform as a trio featuring Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Despite the turmoil, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation that was not as successful as IV. However, the band had a successful chart-topping album in 1992, Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was also the first to feature a new singer, Simon Phillips.

The studio album came out shortly after, and the band embarked on a world-wide tour in support of the album. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started exploring old tapes and demos for a new record featuring songs that were never recorded before. It was released as a double-album titled Then and Now in 2001.
